Twitter has joined the ranks of social media platforms embracing vertical video content, following the trend set by others. The microblogging company revealed that it is introducing immersive full-screen videos for users of the Twitter iOS app.
In a blog post on September 29, Twitter explained that the updated immersive media viewer expands videos to full screen with a single click, providing users with an easily accessible and immersive viewing experience. To activate this feature, users can simply tap or click on a video within the Twitter app.
As per the blog post and accompanying screenshots, the experience mirrors that of other platforms like Instagram reels. Once a video is launched in full-screen mode, users can scroll up to navigate through a feed of additional videos. To return to the original tweet, users can hit the back arrow at the top corner after finishing their video watching session.
Despite the full-screen format, these videos will still be integrated into tweets, allowing users to click on the screen to view the associated tweet. Users will also have the ability to like, reply to, and retweet the tweet containing the video. The new video experience is expected to extend to the explore section of the app, where videos will be featured alongside Tweets and Trends.
In addition to the announced features, Twitter appears to be experimenting with a video views count feature, akin to the one available on Instagram Reels.
It’s worth noting that the vertical video trend is not limited to social media platforms, as demonstrated by the recent announcement from the American National Basketball Association (NBA) introducing a new NBA app with a specific focus on vertical content.
